How Vishvas Turns Global Trends into Fashion That Sells (Part: 1)

In conversation with Carmen Barbeito on collaboration, craftsmanship, and the balance between creativity and feasibility.

When you look at a well-made garment, you often see the artistry, but rarely the alignment that makes it possible. Between trend forecasting in Europe and sample development in India lies a space where design meets discipline.

For over a decade, Carmen Barbeito, Spanish designer and long-time collaborator, Head of Design at Vishvas, has been shaping that bridge, connecting European trends with Indian craftsmanship. Based in Spain, she works closely with our design and sampling teams in India, ensuring that every concept conceived in Europe can evolve into a collection that’s not just globally relevant but production-ready.

Through this seamless cross-continental collaboration, Carmen and the Vishvas team translate global insights into tangible design directions combining creativity with commercial sense.

In this two-part conversation, Carmen shares her perspective on design integrity, sustainability, and the human side of global collaboration. In this first edition of The Vishvas Perspective, we explore how she balances creativity with production realities, builds long-distance design synergies, and helps Vishvas stay ahead in global fashion manufacturing.

You bring European design expertise to an Indian manufacturing environment. How do you balance international trends with the practical realities of large-scale production at Vishvas

Based in Spain, I work closely with our India team to ensure every global trend we pick can evolve into a garment that’s both desirable and feasible for large-scale production. My European background and proximity to our clients help me understand international aesthetics and market expectations, while my regular visits to our India office keep me deeply connected with the team and the craftsmanship that brings our designs to life.

In many ways, my role is that of a facilitator, making sure the exchange between design ambition and production reality happens seamlessly. Competitiveness in this industry depends on that balance. Sometimes creativity can go too far, but it’s important to align it with what customers actually want, at a price that makes sense for the market. All this collaboration and insight help us adapt global trends thoughtfully to local production capabilities in India.

Having been associated with Vishvas for over 11 years, I’ve witnessed the company evolve into a trusted export partner from India for leading Global brands. From the very beginning of the design process, we factor in material availability, lead times, and technical feasibility to ensure that every piece is not only trend-aligned but also production-ready. It’s this ongoing collaboration between continents that keeps our collections relevant, reliable, and truly global in appeal.

Your team works closely across design, sourcing, and production. How do you ensure smooth collaboration while maintaining quality, innovation, and timely delivery

For me, strong cross-functional collaboration is absolutely essential, it’s what keeps everything running smoothly. Even though I’m based in Spain, I stay deeply connected with our teams in India. I visit clients here in Europe often, which helps me understand their needs better and build stronger relationships.

From the very beginning of the design stage, our sourcing and production teams in India are involved, that’s the only way to ensure alignment from concept to execution. We’re constantly in touch through regular meetings, shared planning tools, and a culture of open communication.

I really believe in a problem-solving mindset where creativity is supported by technical awareness and a shared commitment to quality and deadlines. That’s what keeps innovation alive, but still practical.

Fashion trends evolve quickly. How do you stay ahead of emerging styles, and what role do catwalks, trade shows, and research play in shaping your collections

Fashion moves fast, so staying ahead means keeping our eyes open all the time. We constantly monitor international runways, attend textile fairs like Première Vision, use digital trend-forecasting and track global trend intelligence through platforms like WGSN to stay closely aligned with how fashion is moving across markets.

I also make it a point to visit local trade shows here in Spain and meet clients regularly, it keeps us close to the pulse of the European market. Beyond trends, we also look at consumer behavior and preferences, because that’s what ultimately shapes what sells.

All these insights come together to guide our creative direction, helping us build collections that are not just trend-forward, but also realistic to produce at scale.

Between the mood boards in Spain and the sampling floors in India lies the real magic of design; connection, clarity, and craft.

Carmen’s journey is proof that design is not only about inspiration, but interpretation where creativity travels across geographies and finds expression through collaboration. Through her partnership with the design and sampling teams in India, she turns global ideas into garments that speak a universal language of precision and purpose.

In Part 2, she dives deeper into sustainability, quality, and what it means to design consciously in today’s global fashion landscape.
